Video games and violence

This will certainly be a big topic in our home over the next several years. Although a benefit of you not being a girl is that your hormones will be very different and more even keel- I will have to take a stand on some things that most girls do not have trouble with. For instance violence in movies, violence in video games. Your dad is downstairs right now playing a batman game on his new playstation 3. He is running around killing people in surround sound.
Yikes-- have I got some battles ahead of me.

How am I supposed to teach you that this kind of focus is completely contrary to how God wants you to spend your time or focus on violence when your dad is doing it? How do we tell you something is not a healthy thing to have in your life while your dad looks over my shoulder and winks at you?

There is violence all around us-- every movie, every show and certainly every video game intended for people over 10 is based on some kind of violence. How do I help you build a mind of your own about this in light of God's preferences. I prayed so hard putting you to bed tonight that you will never be someone who is violent to another person. I just pray that you will miraculously see the value in being God's man. God's man is simply this--- He wants you to spend your time on things that bring glory to Him. If it doesn't bring glory to Him-- He would prefer you not waste your time on it. That is going to sound like crazy talk to you as an adolescent because it sounds too extreme for your dad and he just turned 36.

I hope that I can impart this stuff to you without lecturing you so that all you want to do is get away from me. That is pretty common at some points as every adolescent thinks their parent is the worst-- but that is so hard to picture of the sweet cuddly baby in yellow jammies that I just put to bed.

Anyway-- God does want us to have fun. I pray that you learn how to have fun in ways that do not include violence. We'll talk about this later---- many times.
